zodiac on parade
In 2021, as COVID shut down live events, the San Francisco Chinese New Year parade committee had the idea of celebrating the holiday through a multi-piece, public art project spread around the city, as a means of making the usually crowded celebration safe
for social distancing.
The project was a hit, and while the parades picked back up one year later, it has become an annual tradition. We have made between 2-11 pieces each year since 2021.
Each year, I have acted as art director and fabrication lead, overseeing the design and fabrication of the statue's physical shapes.
The decorative artwork that brings the statues to life is designed by local artists, and hand painted by our team of artists at The Parade Guys.
I have had the opportunity to design and execute the art for some of these pieces.
Each piece is sponsored by local business' and displayed throughout the city in public spaces and commercial venues.

Below are galleries showcasing the pieces I designed and painted, in some cases with assistance from our team.

For year of the Wooden Dragon, I designed a dragon that was assembled using 24 sheets of plywood, cut on a CNC machine and assembled like a giant puzzle.
The Rainbow Dragon concept art was created in Adobe Illustrator.
Painted using latex paints, with help from Amy Koehler.
Lucky used this imagery on their in-store and promotional prints, and asked us to make a second, larger version for their Chinese New Year parade float.
